F. G. Messenbaeck
Franz G. Messenbäck lives and works as a photographer and surgeon in Bischofshofen, Salzburg. In his opinion, the two professions complement each other perfectly. The precision of surgical procedures influences his photography, while the aesthetic sensitivity required by photography also has advantages for surgery. Franz G. Messenbäck began to take photography seriously during his medical studies at the University of Vienna, gaining his first experiences in the dark room back in 1985. A great admirer of 20th-century American landscape photographers, he quickly started using a large-format camera. Since 2008, his photography has been exclusively digital. Though he originally concentrated on back & white shots, his new approach has also brought him into the world of color photography.
Since 2009, Franz G. Messenbäck has also been a professional photographer. His primary interest is landscape photography, though he also runs a small, though acclaimed portrait studio in Bischofshofen. He travels a lot, mostly in the American West and to Northern Europe, where he encounters secluded landscapes full of structures and abstractions that appeal to him especially. These impressions of tranquility and balance provide a welcome counterpoint to his surgical work.
In 2013, Franz G. Messenbäck received the prestigious Master QEP (Master Qualified European Photographer), which is awarded by the Federation of European Professional Photographers (FEP). In 2016, the Association of Professional Portrait Photographers (bpp) honored Franz G. Messenbaeck as only the second Austrian to receive the title of “Professional Photographer of High Quality”.
